It is, together with Leopoldo Alas y Ureña's La Regenta (The Judge's Wife), one of the most popular and representative novels of Spanish literary realism. Born in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, the author went to Madrid, the capital, to study law at age 18. There he would create a literary world that was present in almost all his writings. The novel created a sensation upon its release because of its scathing critique of the Spanish middle class, and for its frank sexuality. While criticized by political and religious leaders, it was praised by peers of Galdós for its realistic depiction of life amongst all classes in 19th century Madrid. Fortunata y Jacinta (Fortunata y Jacinta), fue escrita por Benito Pérez Galdós en 1887. Es, junto con La Regenta de Leopoldo Alas y Ureña, una de las novelas más populares y representativas del realismo literario español. Nacido en Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Islas Canarias, el autor fue a Madrid, la capital, para estudiar leyes a los 18 años. Allí crearía un mundo literario que estuvo presente en casi todos sus escritos. La novela creó una sensación en su lanzamiento debido a su crítica mordaz de la clase media española, y por su franca sexualidad. Aunque criticado por líderes políticos y religiosos, fue elogiado por sus colegas de Galdós por su representación realista de la vida entre todas las clases en el siglo XIX en Madrid.
